Irish President Catherine Connolly has urged people to confront the suffering of Palestinians and resist the normalisation of war and genocide. Her public statements place human dignity and the responsibility to act at the centre of that message.

A welcome for students from Gaza

On 15 July 2026, President Connolly welcomed university students from Gaza to Áras an Uachtaráin. She acknowledged the catastrophic circumstances that had brought them to Ireland, praised their perseverance and said their experiences challenged others to confront the erosion of humanity. She emphasised that the responsibility to take action belongs to everyone.

Peace must remain a public responsibility

In a statement following her meeting with US President Donald Trump on 12 September 2026, Connolly said she had conveyed the Irish people’s rejection of the normalisation of war and genocide. She drew on Ireland’s experience of famine, colonisation, conflict and the difficult road to peace, reaffirming a commitment to the United Nations and peaceful resolution of international disputes.

These are President Connolly’s stated positions. Her words offer a forceful appeal to keep suffering visible and to use public responsibility in the service of peace.

Our perspective

The World Human Peace Foundation believes that no civilian life should become invisible or expendable. Protecting human dignity, seeking accountability and refusing to become indifferent to suffering are responsibilities shared across borders.

Peace needs people willing to stand together—and act.
